Dacorum Heritage has shared some of the fascinating history behind a worldwide brand that once called Kings Langley home.
In the lead-up to Christmas, Dacorum Heritage shared a new question each day on its Facebook and Instagram pages, with the answers provided on Christmas Eve.
Each question offered an interesting snapshot into the borough’s past, including many which tested residents’ knowledge about Ovaltine.
The factory which made the famous malted drink was based in Kings Langley. Though it is now private housing, the distinctive Art Deco façade remains.
The quiz included questions on Ovaltine’s brand character the Ovaltine Maid and which product the company made for teething infants, as well as historic photos of the borough.
One question asked residents to recall the lyrics for the Ovaltineys radio programme theme tune. The Ovaltiney Radio Show was aimed at children and was broadcast on Sunday evenings in the 1930s.
An updated Ovaltiners Club was launched in the 1960s and 70s, with none other than Morecambe and Wise as its presidents. An Ovaltiney LP, featuring jingles from the show, was produced in 1980 and entered the top 20 in the charts.
The quiz offered residents the chance to reminisce on memories of Ovaltine, whether they worked in the factory, enjoyed the drink, or were a member of the League of Ovaltineys, a children’s club which at its peak had an estimated five million members.
