A class of Rickmansworth reception pupils raised money for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) last month.
When Arnett Hills JMI School’s Owl class, made up of children aged four to five, began learning about deforestation and plastic in the oceans, they were so upset that they were determined to do something to make a difference.
Teacher Sarah Hacking said: “I asked them what they would like to do, and they came up with some great ideas. Some children suggested bringing in old toys and selling them in a shop or doing some upcycling. They upcycled necklaces using bottle caps, bracelets using old straws, bookmarks using a range of small scraps, and bobblehead toys out of newspaper and old fabric and buttons.”
On May 19, the children sold their wares to other students and raised £253.72 for WWF.
The children have used the money to adopt an orangutan, an elephant, a turtle, and a giant panda, as well as to buy more litter pickers for the school.
Sarah added: “I am so proud of my class and know the future will be brighter with them in it.”
