79th Bushey & Oxhey Scout Group are kicking off their 60th year with the grand opening of a brand new kitchen.
Jane Hinch, who has been a Beaver leader for over 15 years and has recently taken over the cubs, put a request on the local WhatsApp hub conversation, asking if anyone could donate a kitchen. It transpired that one of the Beavers’ mothers works for MP Moran, a building company based in Watford. After speaking to her manager, the company generously agreed to fit the scouts with a stunning new kitchen.
The scouts also received a donation of a new oven and hob from Bosch, new doubled glazed windows made and donated by GAP Ltd and tiles and grout supplied by Wickes.
Two fathers, Dan and Steve, and Jane worked on the kitchen painting, sanding, plumbing, tiling and much more. Jane said:
“Dan and Steve were super amazing – they did most of the work.”
The grand opening will take place on Saturday 20th at 2pm and will officially be opened my local councillor Louise Nichols.
Jane says the next big project on the agenda is dealing with a leak in the roof, damp, and upgrading and replacing the lavatories. During heavy rain, the floor of the loo can get flooded.
79th Bushey & Oxhey Scout Group was founded on 1st July 1964 and moved to its current premises in 1966. This year they are celebrating their 60th anniversary and will be hosting a celebration inviting all past and present scouts and leaders in the summer for a fete/BBQ.
The thriving group group includes Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts with well over 80 children aged 4 to 14. Jane said:
“We have seen an increase of children with social development issues, coming to Scouts helps them to build confidence and self-esteem, as well as learning new skills what will help them through life.
“We are very much part of the local community with events we run like our afternoon teas, quizzes and Christmas carols.”
