LUTHER’S LEGACY: Hornets legend given legacy cap for international career

Watford FC legend Luther Blissett OBE DL has collected yet another accolade, after being given his legacy number last month.

The England men’s senior legacy cap programme was unveiled in March to recognise former senior internationals for their contributions to playing for England.

On Monday, March 24, Luther was presented with his legacy cap, having been the first black player to score in a men’s England shirt. Football fans will likely remember him scoring his hattrick against Luxembourg in a 9-0 masterclass back in 1982.

Heading to social media, Luther said: “What an honour to have been given my Legacy number and cap… To represent England is the pinnacle. I remember my mum’s pride when Graham Taylor phoned to announce my call-up for England. I am sure it made Watford fans proud and still does.

“Their first full England international. Their first black manager. The first black player to score for England. A hat trick too. It seems unreal… Pioneering the way as we did for young players so that today they never know the struggles we overcame.

“Thank you, everyone.”
