A planning application for a new Lidl supermarket in Hunton Bridge has been approved despite access fears.
In a Three Rivers District Council Planning Committee meeting on March 14, demolition of the World of Water Aquatic Centre and erection of a Lidl on the site on Watford Road were approved.
Since plans were first submitted in 2022, concerns have been raised over the potential for accidents as drivers attempting to enter and exit the site would have to turn across the busy A41 dual carriageway.
Lidl first exchanged contracts on the site in 2022, but once it submitted its plans later that year, Hertfordshire County Council raised “fundamental issues” over how drivers would enter the site.
The final arrangement was to reconfigure the existing entrance to make the access road a minimum width of 7.3 metres until reaching the car park, and moving a pedestrian crossing so that a ‘ghost island’ right turning lane could be created.
When it was assessed, the county council’s highways team removed its objections.
The proposed supermarket will span 1,457-square metres and have a car park with 98 spaces.
