LEAFLET ‘LIE’: Leader of Three Rivers council demands Chorleywood MP retracts ‘fake news’ leaflets

Gagan Mohindra, Conservative MP for South West Hertfordshire, has come under criticism after leaflets which allegedly contain “lies” were circulated to residents.

The leaflets, signed by Mr Mohindra MP, ask local residents if they are “aware of Three Rivers District Council’s (TRDC) plans to build homes on the green belt” in Chorleywood.

The leaflets state: “Liberal Democrat-controlled TRDC has been pressing on with plans to build 1,000 new dwellings across two green belt sites.”

The Leader of TRDC councillor Sarah Nelmes was keen to respond, labelling the information as “not just slightly misleading but a downright lie”.

Cllr Nelmes said: “Whilst there can always be political banter or areas of misunderstanding, the claims by the MP that we have wanted to build more than 1,000 new homes on a green belt site are just fake news. TRDC has never suggested the site and excluded it from the public consultation on our Local Plan.

“Furthermore, on March 23, we actually refused two planning applications: one for 800 and one on the same site for a lesser number of 300 on this site at Green Street in Chorleywood. His story is just a total fabrication.”

The applications for new homes to the north of the village proved highly controversial, and received more than 1,400 online comments from concerned residents.

Deputy Leader councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst stated: “This latest leaflet follows on from repeated misleading Conservative leaflets about the Local Plan and green belt developments. It appears the MP cannot add up as the development suggested here by developers was for a maximum of 800 homes, not 1,000!”

Mr Mohindra MP has been contacted for comment.
