‘LASTING LEGACY’: Northwood students raise £7,500 for Nepalese schools

Last July, a team of boys from Merchant Taylors’ School travelled to Nepal to help out with a local school, HVP Balkumari.

The group taught primary and secondary school pupils English, maths, and science, developing “a lasting connection to the school and to the young people of Nepal”.

Now, the students have worked together to raise funds to further support the school.

Mr Hilton-Dennis, head of English at Merchant Taylors’, said: “Wanting to leave a lasting legacy, they have come together to raise an extraordinary amount of money, a total of £7,537.60.”

Donations were secured from family and friends, alongside a range of creative fundraising activities. One student set up a portable table in Trafalgar Square in London and challenged passers-by to games of chess in exchange for a small contribution.

The money will be shared between HVP Balkumari and its sister school, HVP Thali.

Mr Hilton-Dennis added: “[Their work] will enable a refurbishment of half of all the classroom desks across the schools, which means the HVP students will feel every day the benefit of their efforts.

“The principals of the two schools… have already expressed their gratitude on behalf of the schools and hope that when the next expedition comes to Nepal in July 2026, they will see the new desks in action. They may very well be teaching from one side of them.

“Very well done to the expedition team of 2024 and my huge thanks to each of them. I hope that several of them will return to Nepal as independent volunteers when they are a bit older. They know a very warm Nepalese welcome awaits them.”
