KEEPING HISTORY: Amersham Museum receives £2,000 grant to protect ‘endangered craft’

Published on: 8th February 2025   |   By: Owen Barnard   |   Category: Uncategorized

Amersham Museum has received a grant from Heritage Crafts as part of a scheme to safeguard some of the UK’s most endangered craft skills.

The £2,000 grant will help the museum run straw plaiting workshops and a remote peer-learning network for straw hat plaiting, with support from Veronica Main MBE, who has more than 40 years of experience in the field.

The museum will also become a hub for the craft, supplying tools and materials.

Heritage Crafts awarded the grants through its Endangered Crafts Fund, which was launched in 2019 to help rare crafts survive into the next generation.

A spokesperson for the museum said: “We are delighted to receive funding from Heritage Crafts to support straw plaiting at Amersham Museum.

“As a local endangered craft, we are excited to be working with Veronica Main MBE to deliver workshops for beginners and more advanced makers to help to ensure its survival. We’re also looking forward to commissioning a contemporary straw plait hat to add to our collection, so that we can present it is as a vibrant craft to visitors.”
