A Dementia Activity Co-Ordinator received a prestigious award from the West Herts Hospital Trust (WHHT) to acknowledge his hard work with patients.
Jeremy Ruppersburg was the winner of the latest Celebrating Excellent Staff Award which highlights a member of staff who does an exceptional job and goes above and beyond the call of duty.
Patients, families, visitors, members of the public and staff can nominate an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to their experience. Any of the WHHT’s 4,500 staff can be nominated including contractors, for instance members of our catering and security teams.
Jeremy’s role uses specialist techniques to help patients with dementia keep active and independent. This includes supporting them to maintain pre-existing hobbies and other leisure activities.
During the month, WHHT received 24 nominations for their staff, including two for Jeremy.
One of the nominations said: “He makes it his business to know everything about each patient. He often knows why they are happy or sad at different times of day, and the best way to cheer them up or to entertain them. When they are agitated he is often the best person to calm them down, and he is invaluable as a liason between patients and their families and friends”.
Jeremy was presented with his award by Trust Chief Executive, Samantha Jones. She said: “Jeremy is a key member of our care of the elderly team helping to support patients living with dementia. He always goes above and beyond his role. Jeremy’s commitment to his job and the work he does are fully deserving of widespread recognition.”
Jeremy’s recent work has included helping to open a garden for patients who are staying on Bluebell ward (our dedicated ward for patients with dementia). The garden, which officially opened in July, offers a space for patients to enjoy peace and quiet which can help to ease anxiety and support them in being independent.
Patients are encouraged to care for the plants and look after the garden
Jeremy said: “I am really pleased to have been nominated for this award. I would like to thank all of the people that voted for me”.
