A Berkhamsted resident is set to embark on a challenge in which will see him tackle some of the highest peaks in the United Kingdom.
In August John English will be taking on the Ultra X Multi-Day Ultra Marathon which will see him run 250km across five days in Snowdonia National Park from August 8 to 12.
As part of the challenge, John will be raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association after being inspired by story of rugby player Rob Burrow.
Speaking to BerkhamstedNews, John who had got into running over lockdown said he wanted to take on the challenge but also make a small difference in some way.
He said: “It came about after watching a documentary on Rob Burrow and seeing how his life went from Mr Fitness to wheelchair over a period of 18 months.
“There’s no cure, no understanding; it’s a disease that needs so much money to investigate.”
John is on a rigorous 16-week training plan and is over halfway there, having just completed week 10.
He said: “As each week goes on it’s getting tougher and tougher, but I’m halfway through now and on the finishing straight.
“There’s so much going through my head, I can’t wait but I’m scared. Not only have I signed up to the challenge but I’ve also got 90 odd people who have sponsored me.
“I’ve got all these people backing me, crossing the finish line will be a feeling I won’t ever of had before.”
So far John has raised more than £4,000 and is hoping to smash his £5,000 target.
