INSPIRATION: Northwood alumna and West End star nominated for trailblazer award

A multi-award-winning graduate from a Northwood school has been nominated as Trailblazer of the Year.

At just 30 years old, Northwood College for Girls alumna Carrie Hope Fletcher has already been performing on the West End stage for more than 20 years, having debuted in Les Misérables aged nine.

Carrie’s career has blossomed since then. Her West End roles have included appearances in productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, and two further returns to Les Misérables. She has now played young and old Eponine, as well as Fantine, and is credited as the only British actor to have played all three roles.

In addition to two Grammy nominations and three WhatsOn Stage Awards to her name, she has also published nine books.

She is now one of three nominees for the Girls’ Day School Trust Trailblazer of the Year award.

Drama teacher Celest McCoy, who still works at the college today, always knew Carrie was “destined for great things”.

She said: “Her talents were obvious from the moment she joined us in Year 7, particularly her incredible voice.

“We’re all so proud of her; it couldn’t happen to a nicer person. She’s done so much already! She’s a fantastic role model for the other students, which is why I nominated her for the Trailblazer award. She is showing everyone what is possible and that you can pursue your dreams. She’s also done so much for body positivity, which is great for all the young girls at the college.

“We are still in touch with Carrie and are optimistic she will be able to join us one day soon, perhaps to judge a talent competition, though she has a very busy schedule these days!”
