INCREDIBLE WORK: Charity based in Bushey helping foreign communities rebuild their lives

Published on: 15th February 2022   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

A unique charity run right in the heart of Bushey is inviting local residents to help them have a positive impact on communities less fortunate than their own.

The Together Plan, co-founded in 2013 by Debra Brunner, empowers communities in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to learn how to help themselves, with particular focus on Belarus.

The charity’s UK hub is located at Debra’s home – The Studio, 60 Glencoe Road – with a Belarus base in Minsk.

The charity is a member of the AEPJ – European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Heritage and Culture – and is working to build a Jewish Cultural Heritage Route through Belarus.

The route is part of the European Route of Jewish Heritage, one of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

Its mission at The Together Plan is to help not only Jews still living in the region learn how to rebuild their communities, but also to reconnect those in the diaspora to their ancestry and the homes they left behind.

Debra told BUSHEYnews: “I moved to Bushey when COVID-19 first started, and at that time, we only had four volunteers. Incredibly, we now have 37, not counting those in Belarus.

“However, a lot of residents still don’t even know we’re here!

“Now that COVID restrictions are easing up, we are planning to put on quite a few local events, which will raise funds for our communities in Belarus, as well as benefit people here.”

The first of those events is a screening of The Mystery of the Black Book at The Pump House in Watford on March 23. It will be the first time the film has been screened in the UK.

The new film explores the history behind The Black Book – a collection of testimonies and articles about the murder of 2.7million Jews under Nazi occupation in the Soviet Union. Tickets are £22.50 and include one free drink. Email london@thetogetherplan.com now to secure your place.
