IN COURT: Man sentenced after sexually harassing teenage girl in Watford

A man has been sentenced for sexually harassing a teenage girl in Watford.

Kamikar Brar, 66, appeared at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, November 13, after previously pleading guilty to one count of engaging in sexual communication with a child.

Brar, of Sutherland Road in London, received a five-month custodial sentence and his name has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register, where it will remain for the next seven years.

During this time, Brar will be subject to the notification requirements and on his release from prison, he will be managed by officers from the constabulary’s Public Protection Unit who will carry out regular risk assessments.

The sentence relates to events which happened on Saturday, May 3, this year, when Brar approached two teenage girls on a stairwell in the Harlequin shopping centre and asked where the bathroom was.

Brar, who was intoxicated, then began asking inappropriate questions and making sexual comments towards one of the girls.

A member of the public walking past noticed the teenagers looked uncomfortable and asked if Brar was bothering them. They said yes, so the member of the public told Brar to leave which he did initially before returning.

A second member of the public then noticed Brar continuing his harassment of the victim and her friend. She, the victim and her friend went to find one of the shopping centre’s security officers, but Brar followed them. Police were called and officers arrived a short time later before placing Brar under arrest.

Detective Constable Clare Lapenna, who investigated, said: “We are pleased to have brought this case to a conclusion for the young victim, who was simply enjoying a shopping trip with her friend when she was targeted by Brar. She has shown great resilience throughout the investigation and court case, and we hope she feels that she can now close this chapter and move forward.

“In Hertfordshire, we take a zero-tolerance approach to sexual offences and we will always do everything in our power to bring perpetrators to justice.”
