‘IMMENSELY PROUD’: Hemel Hempstead crematorium nominated for design prize

A new crematorium which opened in Hemel Hempstead earlier this year has been nominated for a prestigious eco-design award.

The Hemel Hempstead Crematorium is a regional finalist in the 2024 Civic Trust Awards, which praises buildings and designs that make towns and cities a better place to live, whilst being user- and environmentally-friendly.

Situated south of the town, the new development only opened its doors in September. It includes a pavilion for memorials, a chapel for up to 140 people, and extensive landscaping to create a serene and well-organised place for those in attendance.

Dacorum Borough councillor Aga Dychton, vice chair of the West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee, said: “We are immensely proud to be recognised as a regional finalist in the Civic Trust Awards. This nomination is a testament to the Joint Committee’s commitment to creating a serene, accessible, and inclusive space for families to commemorate their loved ones while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.”

The winners will be announced on Monday, January 8, next year. To find out more about the awards, visit their website.
