To celebrate turning 40, a local resident ran up and down an exhausting route in Bushey 20 times to raise money for The Salvation Army.
Katie Ostrowski took to Chiltern Avenue, a well-known hill to joggers in Bushey and Watford, and ran from a post-box at the top of the road, all the way to a post-box at the bottom and back again, completing 40 lengths.
She covered 33.5 kilometres in total on what is one of the steepest hills in the Watford area.
Katie said: “The ‘Chiltern Avenue Post-Box Challenge’ is a particularly long and horrible hill. I wanted to pass 40 post-boxes as part of my 40th birthday challenge.
“I was overwhelmed by people’s generosity; the Salvation Army called me the next day to double-check the figures, as they couldn’t believe how much had been raised!
“The appalling situation in Ukraine made us want to do something, and the Salvation Army were already in Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Poland when the war started, so these funds will provide much needed, immediate support on the ground.”
