A local celebrant featured in an episode of Channel 4’s Married at First Sight (MAFS) on Thursday, October 3.
Hemel Hempstead resident Kelly Hawes officiated Amy and Luke’s wedding when the couple met for the very first time at the top of the aisle.
For those unfamiliar with the premise, MAFS is a bold social experiment where single people marry a complete stranger after meeting for the first time at their wedding ceremony. Therein the series follow the couple as they navigate ‘married’ life.
Although the weddings are not legally binding, it is important to the show that they are treated as such.
This year was not Kelly’s first time officiating a MAFS ceremony; she first appeared on the show in 2021 and has been involved in each series ever since.
The first couple for whom she acted as celebrant of have now gone on to get ‘officially’ married and have a child together.
Speaking to Hemel News, Kelly said: “I love the experience. We film so early on in the year so by the time it comes out, I am still waiting to find out what happens nine months later. It’s just as exciting for me.”
Kelly, who stands within a metre of the couples the first time they meet, said: “It’s the same with any first impression; you come to some sort of judgement and sometimes you can feel the spark and sometimes you can’t.”
When asked what she thought of the premise of the show, she said: “[It’s] a little bit mad, but I did appreciate the science behind it.”
Kelly says that a secret to a long and happy marriage is communication.
She added: “You can’t pretend to be someone you are not, and you have to be open and honest.”
