A student from Northwood College for Girls has won the Atherton Award in recognition of her entrepreneurial spirit.
The award is an annual prize named after British entrepreneur Amber Atherton, and aims to help girls turn their ideas into reality.
This year, Northwood student Layla was crowned the winner of the prestigious award and received a trophy, £500 towards the next phase of her journey, and a day of mentoring with Amber.
Layla said: “When I was first introduced to the Atherton Award, I already knew that I wanted to design something towards tackling climate change because I’ve been passionate about it for many years. At first, I thought of creating a product, but then I realised that app development would cater more to my computer science skill set.
“This led me to develop an idea to design my app, Carbon Climate. I wanted people of all ages to be able to visually see the impact that all the carbon dioxide they emit into the atmosphere has on the world around them. I am really grateful for the money I have received and the opportunity for mentoring with Amber. I plan to develop my app further once I finish my GCSE studies this year.”
Amber said: “I am delighted to recognize Layla as this year’s Atherton Award winner for her game that detects users’ carbon footprint and visualises its impact by affecting their virtual world, creating virtual forest fires, poor harvests, and so on.
“Congratulations to everyone who entered. Northwood girls have entrepreneurial spirit in bucket loads and I can’t wait to watch, and maybe one day invest, in the incredible businesses you might build!”
