A Three Rivers Police Constable (PC) who found himself in the midst of a blackmail incident, involving a teenager being held at gunpoint in a foreign country, has received an award.
In January, PC Radu Vernica Three Rivers Neighbourhood Policing Team was despatched to an address in Chorleywood.
A parent had reported that their son, who was travelling in the Far East, was being held at gunpoint and ransom demands were being made over the phone.
Radu arrived and was immediately thrust into the midst of an active negotiation between a blackmailer and the parent. With calmness, absolute professionalism and exceptional core policing skills, Radu managed a situation that could so easily have spiralled into a tragic outcome.
Radu engaged with the son and calmed the parent. As the situation developed, calls came and went. Through the fast-moving situation, Radu completed an evidence capture far beyond that which could normally be expected of a single crewed PC.
Due to his exceptional handling, the situation was kept stable and improved for nearly an hour until specialist negotiation units arrived. Radu stayed on to provide a seamless transition to the negotiators. The son was subsequently released.
At a Herts Police awards ceremony on Thursday, June 26, Radu was given the Chief Constable’s Commendation, the highest form of constabulary recognition.
The event was hosted by Chief Constable Andy Prophet, who was joined by Assistant Chief Constable Nick Caveney, Chief Superintendent Nev Hanks and Hertfordshire Deputy Lieutenant Fergus McMullen.
Chief Constable Prophet said: “I was honoured to congratulate and meet in person some of you that make this force exceptional.
“Everyone recognised at these awards ceremonies have shown absolute dedication to the job, displayed the highest levels of professionalism and have made significant differences to people’s lives. Congratulations to you all.”
