HORTICULTURAL HELPERS: Northwood girls raise money for homelessness charity with annual plant sale

Published on: 12th July 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

Four young gardeners from Northwood hosted their third plant sale to raise money for a local homelessness charity in what has become an annual tradition.

Alice Gleeson, Esther Fox-Rushby, Priyesi Patel and Rose Mathias-Legg first started planting back during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Mother of Alice, Cathy Gleeson, said: “I think we all found ourselves dabbling in the garden more, growing vegetables and things like that. One of the options the girls had to meet up was to get in the garden.

“The girls took to planting a whole variety of plants, and they soon decided they wanted to sell them and support New Hope charity.”

New Hope is a Watford-based charity that supports homeless and vulnerably-housed individuals by providing accommodation and opportunities to transform lives.

The girls have harvested from their gardens and collected donations from friends and family to stock a plant sale three years in a row. Attending the Eastbury Residents’ Association Summer Fair in both 2021 and 2022, the girls raised more than £1,500 for the charity.

This year, their sale at the fair on June 4 raised a further £950.

A spokesperson for New Hope said: “We are so grateful for the amazing fundraising efforts from the girls – what an achievement to have raised almost £1,000 to support the vulnerable people who come to New Hope! It’s the perfect season for a plant sale and so encouraging that these young people choose to work together to make such a big difference in people’s lives.”

“While homelessness is most visible over the cold winter, the need is still high in the hot months so all support we receive works to provide meals, showers and clean clothes, a safe place to stay and life-changing support to people who have found themselves homeless in Watford.”
