‘HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE’: MP and councillor steps down from Watford Borough Council role after almost 13 years

Watford MP and councillor at Watford Borough Council (WBC) Matt Turmaine MP has stepped down from his role on the council after nearly 13 years in the role, citing his role as MP as the reason to leave the council.

Turmaine MP stepped down from his role within WBC on Friday, March 7, where had been a long-standing councillor for the Holywell ward. He gave up his councillor’s allowance in July, after he was elected Labour MP for Watford, one of the seats the party gained at the 2024 general election.

A by-election for the vacant seat will now be held alongside the Hertfordshire County Council elections on Thursday, May 1.

Turmaine MP said: “It has been an honour and privilege to serve my fellow residents as a local councillor and I enjoyed it enormously. Having been elected as Watford’s MP means, like other councillors across the country, I feel it is right that I step down.

“I’ve done so at this time to minimise the expense of the inevitable by-election which can now be held in conjunction with another election. That way it is cheaper for the taxpayer. That has been uppermost in my thoughts.

“I wish Asma Suleman, who has been chosen by local residents as Labour’s candidate and lives in Holywell, every success and obviously Councillor Nigel Bell in his campaign for re-election to Herts County Council on the same day.”
