A local resident has praised Watford firefighters after they rescued a “distressed” hedgehog from a pond drain.
On the morning of Monday, July 15, David and Yolande Gascoigne wandered into their garden in Bushey to find a hedgehog trapped in the drain of their pond.
David said: “As big animal lovers, we were horrified. As it tried to escape, it was having to push against the direction of its prickles, and it was becoming more and more distressed.”
The couple called every animal rescue service they could think of with little to no success. Eventually, someone suggested they call the fire brigade. Although the couple felt somewhat awkward about calling the emergency services over a trapped hedgehog, they decided to do so.
David said: “Soon there was a knock at the door and three firefighters from White Watch arrived. A lovely lady used some plastic to slide around the poor creature and ease it out. She was an utter hero.
“I have written to the station commander thanking them. I want to recognise the good work of the fire service. People think of them as just dealing with fires, but they do so many other good deeds. They were stars.”
