Performing on stage with your musical icon is a dream that you usually wake up from, however, it’s one that came true for Chorleywood student Ewan Mac.

On Tuesday, December 10, Ewan was in the front row watching his favourite musician, Sam Fender, perform a headline concert at the O2 Arena in London. When the time came for the Geordie singer to perform his hit song, The Borders, Sam selected a lucky audience member to join him on stage.

St Clement Danes School student Ewan knew it was his time to shine. A mere five minutes later, he was on stage performing in front of more than 20,000 people.

A natural performer, Ewan played with lead guitarist Dean Thompson and danced along to the hit single, which Sam described as his “favourite on the [Hypersonic Missiles] album”.

Speaking to Chorleywood news, Ewan said: “I had my sign with me that I had made the night before reading: ‘Sam you’re my hero, can I come and play The Borders with you?’ I managed to get to the barrier right in front of him and knew the song Getting Started was before The Borders.”

Ewan waved the sign and caught the singer’s eye. Sam then asked him if he knew the chords, to which Ewan screamed a momentous yes.

Ewan continued: “When I walked up, I fist pumped the air with the crowd chanting. It was the most amazing experience of my life, one of those moments you have to pinch yourself to actually realise it really happened.”

Videos of Ewan performing with Sam went viral on TikTok, with social media users praising Ewan’s performance, energy and style.

He said: “After the song finished, I got a photo with him and then walked back down the steps off the stage. Everyone was trying to give me high fives and I felt like a celebrity!

“I wasn’t nervous at all and just enjoyed the moment. Nothing will ever beat looking out to a sold-out O2 Arena. It made me realise dreams come true and one day I would love to be back up on that stage playing with my own band!”

A spokesperson for St Clement Danes School said: “We have always been incredibly proud of Ewan and his exceptional musical talents. Sharing the stage with a world-famous singer is an incredible milestone, and we hope it inspires him even further.

“We’re delighted he was able to share his remarkable guitar-playing skills, and we can’t wait to see what he achieves next.”
