A group of Northwood residents all currently hosting refugees from Ukraine and their guests have gotten together to provide advice, support and a social network.
As Russia’s invasion continues to rage six months on, an end to the war remains out of sight, meaning that despite the wishes of many refugees to return home, many of the refugees continue their stay in the UK.
Various local groups have been able to provide aid to the displaced and their hosts, such as the English lessons currently being provided by Emmanuel Church, the free legal aid being given by a Northwood synagogue and from the councils of both Hillingdon and Three Rivers.
However, what is currently lacking is an easily accessible way to find all of the resources. This informal group, primarily organised through WhatsApp, seeks to solve that problem.
Jonathan Banks is one of the hosts who form a part of the group. He asked residents for help in finding resources, saying: “There isn’t a centralised listing of the help and concessions available. If you can offer something please let us know.
We’ve created a WhatsApp group for Northwood hosts to help share this kind of information. And if you’re a host that hasn’t joined our group, please also get in touch.
“You don’t have to live in Northwood, just be fairly close. So far we’ve organised a couple of Sunday afternoon tea and cake sessions which have been useful and fun!”
If you’d like to help, or if you’re a host who wishes to join the WhatsApp group, please email Jonathan at jonathanmbanks@hotmail.com
