HELP HOMELESS: Bushey and Radlett residents urged to help rough sleepers

Published on: 2nd April 2020   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

Members of the public in Bushey and Radlett are being asked to help reach out to people who are sleeping on the streets in Hertsmere during the coronavirus lockdown.

Last week the Government asked local authorities to close communal night shelters and hostels and provide support to those sleeping rough during the global pandemic.

Rough sleepers are particularly at risk of contracting the virus because many have underlying health conditions and they cannot self-isolate.

Hertsmere Borough Council’s housing team have been contacting known rough sleepers in the borough and working with its partners, including Hertfordshire Police, to reach out to other individuals who may qualify for support.

To that end, the council is appealing for the public’s help via StreetLink.

StreetLink is a website, mobile phone app and telephone service which enables members of the public to connect adults sleeping on the streets with local services.

Councillor Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for housing, said: “Our main priority at this time of unprecedented national crisis is to keep our residents safe, particularly those in vulnerable groups, such as rough sleepers.

“While we have been able to provide a number of individuals with accommodation, there may be others who we have not as yet been able to contact and who would qualify for support.

“We would ask members of the public who are worried about anyone sleeping rough to report it through StreetLink.

“In the meantime, we are working with our partners, including the police, to visit rough sleeprs to provide them with guidance of where to go for support.”
