A Northwood resident has raised almost £10,000 after taking on the London Marathon with three friends in aid of a charity she set up to combat poverty.
Pallvee Shah, 43, ran the Virtual London Marathon on October 3, to raise money for Help Change Lives, which helps vulnerable people suffering from poverty.
Help Change Lives has several projects including providing reusable sanitary pads to very poor girls in Kenyan schools, sponsoring children’s education, supporting street children and supporting families in western Kenya with food, medical aid, toilets and shelter.
Speaking to NorthwoodNews about why she set up the charity, Pallvee said she wanted to “break the cycle” and help make the world a better place.
She said: “I actually grew up in Kenya, so I am very aware of the poverty that is there. The charity started off by helping one family and then grew organically from there.
“We have so much and the people there are so poor, I want to help make the world a better place.
“We collaborate with other charities as we know we can’t make an impact all by ourselves.”
After turning vegan six years ago, Pallvee became interested in running taking inspiration from other vegan sports personalities, with the marathon becoming the perfect way to raise money for the charity.
Taking on the marathon accompanied by her sister Hema Khimasia (from Pinner) and two other friends, Pallvee completed the race in just over five hours.
She and the team have raised £9,173 for Help Change Lives with the marathon, and are still collecting donations to reach their target of £10,000.
