HEARTBREAKING: Rickmansworth Cricket Club members devastated after memorial bench destroyed

Published on: 24th August 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Members of Rickmansworth Cricket Club have been left deeply upset and disgusted after a memorial bench dedicated to a late member was destroyed by trespassers.

The vandalism took place on Tuesday, August 22. Members of the public, who were prevented from accessing Scots Hill by a police barrier as officers conducted an investigation, dismantled the bench. They then used it as a frame to climb over a fence into the grounds of Rickmansworth Cricket Club, which they trespassed through to get to Croxley.

The bench, which was installed last year, is dedicated to club member Marc Robinson, who passed away from cancer. Members had donated a total of £800 to fund the memorial.

Cricket club chairman Paul Blackwell told Ricky News of his upset over the incident.

He said: “Marc was a very dear friend to me. He was a wonderful person. There’s no excuse for this; it’s had me in tears.

“The bench is him. The memorial plaque on it is very clear. There’s just no reason for it. It’s a sad indictment. You don’t think people would do something like that.

“We’ll put it back together or maybe get a new one. But it’s that thought that hurts.”

Another member of the club, Tom Arnold, said: “It doesn’t matter what reasons you need to get through for. It’s outrageous that anyone would think that’s an okay way to behave.”
