HATE CRIMES: New data reveals incidents on the rise in Three Rivers

New data has revealed that figures of recorded hate crime in Three Rivers have gone up in the last three years.

In 2016, 71 of these incidents were recorded by Hertfordshire Constabulary in Three Rivers, but in 2021, 119 were . Overall, 517 incidents have been logged in the area since the beginning of April 2016 and the end of March 2022.

Of those 517 incidents, 431 were race-related, a huge 82 per cent of recorded crimes. 39 of the incidents were related to a person’s sexual orientation, 25 were faith-related, 17 were disability-based and five were transphobic.

As for the wider region of South West Hertfordshire, including the Watford, St Albans, Dacorum and Hertsmere areas, 4,752 hate crimes were recorded by police between April 2016 and March 2022. At least 55 per cent of those incident were race based.

In the period between April 2016 to March 2018, 1,646 incidents were recorded in the region, whereas in the period between May 2018 to March 2022, 3,106 incidents were recorded, which Is nearly double the amount.

Hertfordshire Constabulary have been contacted for comment.
