HAPPY RETURNS: Stanmore arts and crafts group celebrates first anniversary

Published on: 6th June 2023   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

An arts club set up in Stanmore to combat loneliness celebrated its first anniversary last month.

The Stanmore Arts and Crafts Club was set up by friends Mui Cheung and Olivia King-Boateng in May last year after they realised they both had a passion for making things and were in need of companionship after the COVID-19 lockdowns.

On Tuesday, May 23, members of the club celebrated the anniversary with a party at Stanmore Library, complete with crafts, cakes and drinks.

Speaking to Stanmore News about why they decided to set up the club, Mui said: “Me and Olivia met up for a coffee and we were a bit down and started catching up. I said I had been doing lots of art and she suggested that we meet regularly and keep each other company.

“We approached the Stanmore Arts and Crafts Facebook group as we knew lots of people were doing arts and crafts at home. We met with the library manager who was very keen.”

Since its inception, the group has grown and members even took a trip to the Fashion and Textile Museum in London together.

Mui said: “It’s something that has helped the community. We do our own arts and crafts, but we have someone to sit with and talk to.”

The crafts completed at the group include crochet, knitting, jewellery marking, mandala dot painting, weaving, card making, and more.

Anyone is welcome to attend the club, which meets every Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm in one of the meeting rooms at Stanmore Library.
