A “huge” 60th anniversary camp was officially opened by a ten-year-old Bushey guide while the scout who cut the ribbon of its very first camp was also in attendance.
Melissa, of 4th Bushey Guides, won a competition to design a commemorative badge to mark the occasion. As winner, Melissa was tasked with launching the 60th camp at Lees Wood Scout and Guide Activity Centre in Rickmansworth on June 14, exactly 60 years since the original opening of the campsite.
Melissa said: “When I was told there would be 600 Scouts and Guides there, it made me very nervous. I had to press a big red button to start the evening disco…. and a big number sixty made of lights turned on along with music when I pressed it!”
100 Guides and 500 Scouts camped under canvas from June 14-16. An additional 250 younger members joined the fun for the day on Saturday.
Campers had a choice of 60 different activities over the weekend including pedal karts, a bungee run, giant assault course, axe throwing, crossbows, archery, a variety of crafts and woggle carving. They also enjoyed a traditional campfire and toasted s’mores.
A VIP reception was held during the camp to formally mark the 60th anniversary.
Ali Hampton, Chair of the Lees Wood Fundraising Committee said: “We were delighted that Dr Ian Doolittle, the Scout who cut the ribbon on the original opening of the campsite on June 14th 1964 was also able to join us, alongside current and past Scout and Guide Commissioners and crew. Dignitaries included the Mayor and Mayoress of Hertsmere and the Deputy Mayor of Watford.”
