Croxley Guides and Rangers were among the 500 young people who camped at the Lees Wood Scout and Guide Activity Centre in Chandlers Cross, from June 14 to 16, to celebrate 60 years since the site was first opened.

Campers had a choice of 60 different activities over the weekend – including pedal karts, a bungee run, giant assault course, axe throwing, crossbows, archery, a variety of crafts and woggle carving. They also enjoyed a traditional campfire, toasting s’mores and dancing the conga round the large field.

A VIP reception was held during the camp to formally mark the 60th anniversary. Ali Hampton, a Rickmansworth leader and Chair of the current Lees Wood Fundraising Committee, said: “We were delighted that Dr Ian Doolittle, the Scout who cut the ribbon on the original opening of the campsite on June 14, 1964, was also able to join us. Dignitaries included the Mayor and Mayoress of Hertsmere and the Deputy Mayor of Watford.”
