Plans to build an Aldi supermarket on London Road in Amersham have been approved by Buckinghamshire Council.
The planning application was first submitted more than three years ago, but a number of hold-ups including a store redesign delayed the approval of the new supermarket.
The plans were given the go-ahead at a Buckinghamshire Council planning meeting on Wednesday, June 12.
At the meeting, councillor Mike Shies said: “Following the previous meeting [on April 30], two neutral letters were received, one of which was from the Amersham Society, stating that members should ensure that the new building pays homage to the vernacular architecture and materials in the area.
“Two more letters of support were issued with one suggesting it would provide jobs, it’ll be a good addition to the local area, and it would be a good use of a brownfield site.”
An Aldi spokesperson previously said: “Aldi knows its customers are currently travelling out of the Amersham area to visit its stores. It has wanted to open a local store in Amersham for some time and is delighted to have identified the former Jaguar Dealership at 44 London Road West as a location.
“This significant investment would create at least 40 new jobs, which Aldi would seek to recruit locally. The site is a disused brownfield site and will be landscaped to complement the local area. There will be 101 parking bays, parking for Blue Badge holders and parents and children. There will also be cycle parking and four electric vehicle charging points.”

Good work, it’s time
This news is upsetting. Old Amersham does NOT need another superstore. Why not build affordable homes on the site? Also the traffic on the close by roundabout will be horrendous. A new roundabout was created when the extremely close Tescos was built. Very disappointed in Buckinghamshire council.
