GREEN HOMES: Hertsmere Borough Council offer grants to upgrade homes for free this winter

Published on: 25th October 2021   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

Residents in Hertsmere have just a few more weeks to apply for a grant of up to £10,000 towards the cost of retrofitting their house and beat the expected energy price hike.

More than 70 homeowners have already taken advantage of the Green Homes Grant scheme, which is being run by Hertsmere Borough Council in partnership with National Energy Foundation and offers low-income households help to fund energy-saving improvements in their homes.

Under the scheme, eligible homeowners can get up to £10,000 and private landlords up to £5000 towards the costs of energy efficiency improvements.

Among the measures which could be made are external wall, underfloor and cavity wall insulation, solar panels and smart heating controls.

The scheme represents an important next step towards tackling fuel poverty, reducing energy use and lowering carbon emissions for the local authority. The current phase closes to new applications at the end of November, and a further phase will launch early in the new year.

Councillor Seamus Quilty, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We all know that fuel price rises are around the corner, which will make heating your home even harder on the pocket this winter.

“Through our scheme, dozens of families and individuals are already on the way to upgrading their homes for free – and you could be one of them.

“A properly-insulated home can save a household up to £250 per year, and helps us, as a borough, to reduce our carbon footprint and move a step closer to achieving our commitment to tackling climate change.

“Now is the time to get your application in. Get in contact with our partners at the National Energy Foundation today. It could be the beginning of making your home, warmer, healthier and help with future costs.”

The programme is being delivered through the Government’s Green Homes Grant funding, which the council secured in partnership with Three Rivers District Council.

The Green Homes Grant scheme aims to help the country achieve its net-zero carbon goal, while also helping households save money, stay warm, and reduce their carbon footprint.
