Waking up to put in hard yards training for a marathon isn’t for the faint-hearted, but for teenager Henry Ashton, it’s all for the greater good.
Henry, 16, who plays at Berkhamsted Golf Club, will be running a marathon on Sunday, December 8. He is aiming to raise funds for the suicide prevention charity, the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
Having struggled with his own mental health when he was younger, anxiety left Henry physically and emotionally unwell.
On his JustGiving page, Henry said: “The main reason for why I have brought this challenge upon myself is to raise awareness of how important our mental health actually is, and my belief [that it is] not being talked about enough.
“Suicide is often a silent issue many suffer with, and by doing this run I hope to bring more attention to the mental health challenges people face. I want my effort to show others they’re not alone and that support is always available.
“I understand how hard it can be to tell yourself that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and that speaking out and seeking help can be a real issue for many.
“Mental health struggles, including suicidal thoughts, are often surrounded by stigma and shame. By publicly supporting this wonderful charity, I am hoping to help break down these barriers, encouraging open conversations, and making it easier for others to seek help.”
