A Garston football club is celebrating the grand opening of its new 3G pitch.

Everett Rovers, one of the biggest youth and amateur clubs in Hertfordshire, held a special event on Sunday, August 13, to open the new pitch, located opposite their clubhouse on Dodd Road.

This new development has been a three-year, million-pound project, funded by the Football Foundation, Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust, a lottery grant, and grassroots funding from club members.

Cutting the ribbon were Steve Hutchinson, vice president and founding member of the club, and Jack Grieves, the 18-year-old forward for Watford FC who played for Everett in his teens.

They were joined by Deputy Mayor of Watford Aga Dychton and local councillor Asif Khan.

Four of the young teams at the club then played on the pitch for the first time, watched by parents and spectators who also enjoyed the recently upgraded clubhouse facilities.

Andy Tyres, Everett Rovers’ vice chairman, said: “This pitch is massively important for us as a club. It helps us grow, and every weeknight here now it’s so busy! The kids love it; it’s a great environment for them to learn to play football. Even in the winter months, we can play now.

“Community football gets people out. It keeps people active, physically active. We’ve got the biggest inclusive age group in Hertfordshire, so for them it’s not just about the kids; it’s about the parents being able to have a nice environment where they can let their kids come up here and play their football. They’ve now also got the clubhouse where they can go and drink and relax, and they know that the kids are looked after.”
