A boxer who trains in St Albans is hoping to embark on a professional career after winning the 63-66kg National Youth Title and the NABGC National Championship.
Demi-Rose Greenidge, 16, will now represent England in the GB Three Nations later this year. Her father, Ricki, spoke to STALBANSnews about her success.
He explained: “She started boxing when she was seven. I took her to St Albans Boxing Club lessons, just trying to get her involved in something. She just carried on, carried on, and carried on. I took her once and she never looked back.”
At one-point, Demi-Rose was training six days a week. Ricki highlighted the strain this had on her.
He said: “She had a little wobble last year; she nearly gave up. She nearly didn’t come back after her GCSEs. However, she went back to her coaches and that brought her confidence back.”
The coaches in question were Sab and Alex Leo from Leo’s Gym in Ware. Ricki highlighted the relationship Demi-Rose has with the gym, saying she “wouldn’t be able to do this without them, mentally and physically”.
Alongside her training, the young boxer is studying Law, English Literature, and Sociology at A Level. Her education has included Townsend School and Oaklands College, both in St Albans.
Looking to his daughter’s future, Ricki said: “Long-term, she wants to be a boxing professional, which she can’t do until she is 18. Law, English, and Sociology are back-ups – she wants to be World Champion.”
Demi-Rose has won 21 bouts and lost only five. She is also a seven-time Box Cup champion and a six-time international champion, including European gold.
The GB Three Nations competition, in which Demi-Rose will feature later this year, is invitation-only and is based on performances in applicable England Boxing National Championships.
Ricki added: “As a dad to her, she’s not only made me proud in boxing; she’s made me proud in life. She’s never caused me any trouble. She’s all I could have asked for as a daughter.”
