A man is raising money for Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood to thank staff for their “unbelievable care and dedication” during his cancer treatment.
Carl O’Reilly, 70, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2018 and received treatment at Mount Vernon.
Starting on Thursday, May 8, Carl and his friend Scott Jell will be walking the 800km Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain over the course of around 34 days. This legendary route dates back to the 9th century and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The pair are aiming to raise awareness and funds for the urology department at Mount Vernon.
They will also donate some of the money raised to the urology departments at Luton and Dunstable Hospital and The Royal Marsden, as Carl also received care at these hospitals.
Speaking to NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews, Carl said: “We wanted to give something back to the hospitals that give so much to so many people.”
Carl is extremely grateful for the care he received.
He said: “I can’t praise the hospitals highly enough; their care and dedication has been unbelievable.”
Carl said that he has completed a few challenges for charity in the past but would not describe himself as an adventurous man. However, he added that “when I put my mind to something, then I will do it”.
Carl’s condition is being monitored carefully and he is still undergoing regular tests. Thankfully, his condition is now stable, meaning he will be able to undertake the pilgrimage.
He said the hospital encourages him to do regular exercise – so you could say the challenge is killing two birds with one stone!
