A Watford mother and her sister are set to trek across the Sahara Desert this November to raise money for the charity that helped to save their young relative’s life.
In November 2019, Pearl was only 13 months old when she suffered a life-threatening episode of bronchiolitis. After being placed on life support, she was urgently transferred from Watford General Hospital to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London.
Now aged seven and a happy pupil at Nascot Wood Infant School, Pearl is thriving. It’s her journey which has inspired her mother, Laura, and her aunt, Jane, to give back by taking on a gruelling charity trek across the desert to the top of Chigaga Dunes in Morrocco.
The PICU at St Mary’s is supported by the charity Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care (COSMIC), which provides equipment, training, and support for families.
Speaking to WATFORDnews, Laura said: “We will never be able to thank the amazing staff at St Mary’s for bringing our little girl back to us but by taking part in this challenge, we are allowing ourselves to give back a little to them.
“Without the donations from COSMIC, the unit would not be able to save as many small children and babies like Pearl.”
