‘GIFT OF CREATIVITY’: Bushey sculptor helping children turn imagination into reality

Published on: 4th February 2025   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Sculptor and creative writer Lucy Houbart, who is based in Bushey, is using her skills to help children “hold the gift of creativity”.

Lucy runs workshops every Tuesday and Saturday evenings at Unitas, a charity which provides “a safe and inspiring place” for all children.

With a fully equipped gym, music room, recording studio, and indoor climbing wall, there are a range of activities for the children to discover.

Visitors will find Lucy in the arts and craft room, which is decked out with a kiln and pottery wheels. Children can make items such as mugs and little dogs which they often gift to others.

Speaking with Busheynews, Lucy shared: “Children need more time to be creative and express themselves. It is very empowering making something from your imagination and turning it into an object.”

Spinning the wheel back in time, Lucy’s own love for the art came from her degree in sculpting, which led her to a career as a theatre set designer. She designed for a range of theatres, including for operas at the Opera Holland Park Theatre in London.

She said: “I like encouraging other people to be creative because I had the privilege to go to art school and create anything I wanted.”

Since then, Lucy has opened up her own pottery workshop in a cabin in her garden.

She also co-hosts classes at Watford Grammar School for Girls on Mondays after school and Saturday mornings.

‘Art knows no bounds’ is certainly a mantra Lucy lives by, as she has also expanded her inventiveness into creative writing. She is inviting locals to come along to her creative writing workshop at Carpenders Park and South Oxhey Methodist Church on Mondays at 11.15am.

You can find out more about Unitas on their website at www.unitasyouthzone.org and see more of Lucy’s work on her Facebook Bushey Pottery.
