A Pinner-based charity is calling for its supporters to take on the Brighton 10k.
In 2017, Molly Russell, a student from Pinner, died from an act of self-harm after suffering from the negative effects of online content.
Since then, her father, Ian Russell MBE, has been working to support mental health in people under 25. As part of this, he set up the Molly Rose Foundation (MRF) to raise awareness for suicide prevention.
Last year, several runners took part in marathons and raised nearly £7,000 for MRF, including Molly’s sisters Rebecca and Alice Russell.
The eight spaces for the Brighton Marathon have been filled, but five spots for the smaller 10k race on Sunday, April 6, are still open.
This year will also see the return of MRF’s Coffee for Molly mental health initiative. This places resources in coffee shops along the running routes to encourage customers to talk about mental health.
Eliza Turner, 23, from Tooting, is running her first marathon for MRF in Brighton.
Eliza said: “It is a personal goal of mine to run a marathon so I thought 2025, why not? From parkruns to running a marathon, I have a long way to go – but I am determined!
“I used to visit Brighton on holiday a lot and heard the course is pretty flat, so it makes sense to run this one for me.
“Brighton has so many coffee shops and it’s a great cause to educate young people and let them know they can share concerns. Coffee for Molly is a brilliant idea.”
