‘GENIUS CRAFTSMAN’: Tributes paid to man who worked in Stanmore with ‘guitar legends’

Musician Bernard Butler has led tributes to a “kind-hearted” guitar craftsman who worked in Stanmore.

Bill Puplett sadly passed away on Saturday, November 9. He was a guitar luthier, a craftsman who makes and repairs stringed instruments.

On TDPRI.com in September 2004, a comment described Bill as “the finest guitar tech around” who had worked with “almost every famous Brit guitar legend there has ever been”.

Bernard said his music would not have sounded the same without Bill’s help.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, November 12, Bernard said: “I’m so sad that we have lost the great Bill Puplett.

“Bill was a guitar luthier and an extraordinary craftsman by trade. He was a humble, gentle soul to all who were welcomed into his idyllic workshop in Stanmore. Bill looked after my guitars for 30 years.”

Whilst Bernard was keen to praise Bill’s incredible talent, he also made clear what a great person he was away from his craft.

Bernard said: “Often I made an excuse to go out and see Bill. It felt like the edge of the world and it was a joy to bring my kids to see the horses as well as Bill’s cave. He pieced my guitars together many times over and knew them inside and out.

“For any of you that know my music, it simply wouldn’t have sounded the same without Bill. That would go for countless others too of course.

“I’ll so miss Bill and am so very grateful for my visits to the workshop to hang out with this kind-hearted, genius craftsman.”
