FUTURE OLYMPIAN: Radlett toddler with ‘competitive spirit’ completes 1,000m swim

A three-year-old from Radlett has astounded her swimming instructor by completing a 1,000m swim at the pool where she trains.

Mila Merritt was only six months old when she learned to swim, and by two years old she could swim 250m. This July, the young athlete challenged herself with a 400m swim and spontaneously kept going even when she’d met her target, ultimately swimming a total of 1km.

According to her father Tom, Mila “absolutely loves swimming” and displays quite the “competitive spirit”. Alongside racing other swimmers, the toddler is particularly motivated by the thought of earning awards and certificates.

Mila’s instructor Michelle Vince said: “I’d like to think she’s some kind of champion. We’ve sent photos off to Swim England to find out if she’s broken any records.”
