An application has been granted to convert agricultural land in Berkhamsted into an open green space for public use.
At a meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s (DBC) Development Management Committee on Thursday, July 11, the owners of the site, Taylor Wimpey, were granted permission to convert the land into a Suitable Accessible Natural Green (SANG) space for recreational activities such as walking.
However, some residents have argued that the wildlife on the land will be adversely affected, and that the change will result in increased traffic.
A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey and Barratt David Wilson said: “The application to create a 60-acre SANG at Castle Hill will provide a recreational area for local people and draw visitor numbers away from Chiltern Beechwoods Special Area of Conservation, the current levels of which are damaging critical habitats there.
“Our proposal seeks to enhance the site with extensive new tree and hedgerow planting, along with grassland and wildflower seeding.
“A Highway Assessment has been submitted which demonstrates that there will be no unacceptable impact on traffic, and the application follows consultation with residents and stakeholders.”
