Former referee Graham Poll has criticised the officials in charge of yesterday’s clash between Watford and Southampton after referee Roger East and his assistants missed Abdoulaye Doucaure’s handball equaliser.
The late strike earnt The Hornets a share of the spoils but video replays showed the Frenchman diverted the ball over the line with his hand.
Although he accepted VAR would have ruled the controversial goal out, Poll thought the match officials should have spotted the goal anyway.
Speaking to BT Sports Premier League Tonight, he said: “What frustrated me about the game – it was Roger East refereeing it – Watford were building up a head of steam, and had got a goal back, coming from 2-0 down, they were attacking and you would be on your toes as a referee and be looking for things. You should be sharp and if you are sharp, you don’t miss that kind of decision.”
