Plans for a new Lidl supermarket in Hunton Bridge have been revised after traffic and safety concerns were raised.
The budget shopping chain applied to open a new store on Watford Road where the World of Water aquatic centre currently sits, which would see the existing building demolished in favour of a large retail store and parking.
However, several issues were raised concerning access to the site and traffic management.
In a comment recommending the plans be rejected, Hertfordshire Highways stated: “This response has identified fundamental issues with the access layout and insufficient supporting information to demonstrate that the development may be accommodated on the highway network.”
Now, Lidl is aiming to submit amended plans to try and alleviate some of these issues, appointing a road safety designer to carry out a transport assessment.
The plans read: “It is concluded that there would be no severe off-site highway impacts that would warrant a reason for refusal, particularly in light of National Planning Policy Framework. Finally, the site is in a sustainable location in respect of access by non-car modes of travel.”
A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “As highway authority, we are not yet satisfied with the proposed access and highway layout for this planning application. We understand that the applicant’s transport consultant is continuing to work on the access design and will be submitting revised plans soon. We will continue to work with the applicant and Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) on this planning application.”
