FLOWER POWER: Borough set to bloom as annual gardening contest opens

Published on: 23rd May 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

The annual ‘Hillingdon in Bloom’ contest has opened for applications once again, with a brand-new category set exclusively for this year.

The ‘Best Platinum Jubilee Display’ category has been put forward to mark 70 years of the Queen’s reign, asking for a red, white and blue or purple and white display in people’s front or back gardens.

Elsewhere, the Best Park and Bloom Display category returns to the competition in a bid to tackle the drop in the number of front gardens, asking competitors to create nice displays in these declining home features.

They join the usual categories of:

  • Best Window Box Display
  • Best Balcony Display
  • Best Hanging Basket Display
  • Best Business Establishment Display
  • Best Novelty Garden Display
  • Best Residential Garden Display
  • The Roome Cup (for best wildlife conservation)
  • Best Display (the grand prize)

Lynn Sutherland, a previous year’s Best Display winner, said: “It’s great fun and definitely worth the effort. It makes you feel good and cheers you up.

“I was really surprised to win, because you always think your garden is not as good as everybody else’s but it’s really fun because all your neighbours and the people passing by all stop and talk to you, so it’s really nice and it gets you involved in the community.

“And you don’t need a lot of space to do a lot.”
