Flores is upfront about Ighalo, Deeney, and Watford FC’s defence

With Odion Ighalo currently the fourth top scorer in the Premier League this season with nine goals, and Troy Deeney following closely behind, much of the focus has been on the forwards this season. But are the rest of the team being forgotten? Watford are currently the sixth best defensive team in the Premier League and following a win against Norwich, morale is high. With upcoming games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham, head coach Quique Sanchez Flores made it clear that the approaching fixtures placed no extra pressure. He said: “It is football, everything is possible. They are not the easiest games for the rest of December but as I say, we just play one match at a time.” Following claims from Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce of the game being a “six pointer”, Flores disagreed. “We get three points if we are able to win. In the second leg, we will see what happens,” he added. Questions were asked after six of last season’s players made the starting line-up, despite an influx of new players at the start of this season. “When I choose the first eleven I am not thinking if they were here last year or if they are new players. For the players and team to improve, maybe players are on the bench,” he said. The Watford boss remained vague when asked if the transfer window could be a busy one, adding: “We have to think of everything. Players may or may not be kept in the squad. We try to be positive and use players in their best position.” Deeney is the first Watford player to score in four consecutive Premier League appearances, and Ighalo has scored four goals and had two assists in the last six games, setting standards high for what could be Watford’s third consecutive win on Saturday. “Deeney is very constant and Ighalo scoring goals. The players and club are working well. It’s perfect,” Flores commented. Despite a steady start to the season, Flores seems set on bringing Watford FC further up the table this season, telling us that his expectations of this season are simply “to improve”. “We will have a different plan for Sunderland. We have the spirit, the players and we are able to have everything,” added the Hornets head coach.
