FLIPPING FUN: Charity pancake race on its way to Rickmansworth

Published on: 18th February 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

The nearly-20-year-old Rickmansworth Pancake Race, organised by Watford Mencap, will take place on March 1, Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day), back with a bang after a year away.

Sponsored by local estate agents Gibbs Gillespie and the celebratory buffet, pancakes and pans provided by nearby pub The Coach and Horses, the race, despite it’s charity event status, is a highly competitive one.

The rules are simple, but not easy, with a four-person team taking part in a relay race, all the while holding a frying pan with a pancake inside. Pancakes have to be flipped at least once by every runner, and they have to still be in the pan by the time racers cross the finish line. Four heats will take place, before the final winner is decided in one last race.

Races will started by the attending High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Lionel C. Wallace, who will also on hand to present the winners with their trophy.

The event usually raises around £1000 for Watford Mencap, which proves vital in helping the charity carry out it’s work in providing support and services for people with learning disabilities throughout the area.

This money is raised by the £80 entry fee for teams and the donations made by spectators into the nearby charity buckets spread around the race course.
