Plans for a new bar and restaurant to open in the Riverside Shopping Centre have been approved, despite some opposition.
The Orange Buffalo is an up-and-coming restaurant chain that serves award-winning chicken wings, starting as a food truck in Shoreditch and now planning for a global expansion.
The Hemel Hempstead venue will be the company’s first outside of the capital, and will, according to the planning application, provide: “a New York style chicken wings restaurant and bar, with live sport on television, and recorded music with DJs on Fridays and Saturdays, and the provision of covered outside seating for 24 customers.”
Councillors granted the new franchise a licence to serve alcohol at a meeting of their Licensing of Alcohol and Gambling sub-committee on November 9.
Work has now started to put in signage in the shopping centre’s currently empty unit, which is located between Hemel town centre’s TK Maxx and Pizza Express locations.
However, some councillors did have issues with the application. Cllr Rob Beauchamp (Conservative) objected, express concerns on the potential negative effects the venue might have to the nearby residential area.
Franchisees and residents Charlie and Wesley Read agreed to conditions designed to limit this impact, including a ban on outdoor music and a bar on anyone under the age of 18 on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The new bar and restaurant is expected to be open by the end of the year.
