FESTIVAL FUN: Success at Rickmansworth Festival after rising costs left event under threat

Published on: 24th May 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

Thousands of residents were in attendance to support and enjoy the Rickmansworth Festival after soaring bills meant the event cost nearly twice as much as usual.

In the build-up to the festival, hosts Rickmansworth Waterways Trust (RWT) announced that the price of hosting the two-day event had risen from £40,000 to around £70,000.

RWT appealed for residents to support the event with a donation, which helped the festival to go ahead on May 20 and 21.

The sun was shining across the weekend as festival-goers enjoyed a host of food and drink stalls, market stands, classic fayre entertainment, and live music across a number of stages.

Dr David Montague, festival director and chairman of the RWT, spoke to Ricky News amidst the excitement of the first day. Although delighted that the festival was able to go ahead, he spoke of his concern about the potential costs next year.

David said: “When I started as the festival organiser 20 years ago, it was nothing like this. It used to be a very small event, but it’s just got bigger and bigger, and the costs have gone up astronomically. The JustGiving page raised us around £10,000 which was a massive help, but we have really got to consider how we do things next year.”

David believes that the fee for next year will be closer to £80,000 and is hopeful that a benefactor or business will be able to provide support.
