‘FANTASTIC ACCOLADE’: Northwood College for Girls wins award for dedication to diversity and inclusion

Northwood College for Girls (NWC) has been named Independent School of the Year for Diversity, Inclusion and Justice.

Representatives from the school collected the accolade at the Independent School of the Year awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 8. They were chosen as the winners out of 700 nominations.

NWC has introduced several diversity and inclusion initiatives that ultimately swayed the judges, such as having a diverse array of dolls for younger children and introducing diversity and inclusion prefects throughout the school.

The school has also amended the curriculum to reflect its progressive goals.

Headteacher Mrs Brown said: “New texts, such as Diver’s Daughter, which foregrounds black experience in Tudor Britain, and newly integrated topics, such as the partition of the sub-Asian continent and its impact on modern Britain today, have deepened our curriculum work in this area.

“As part of our English Literature GCSE, we have incorporated the Worlds and Lives poetry anthology, which features poems that consider how we define our own and collective identities through family, heritage, culture, language or profession.”

Student-led activities have also furthered their inclusion mission. This includes a neurodiversity art project, a pride-themed disco to celebrate diverse musicians, and the launch of the My History and Me exhibition, where students displayed items that have played a part in their own personal history.

Mrs Brown concluded: “All these achievements are a result of the dedication and commitment shown by our whole NWC team and I would like to wholeheartedly thank and congratulate our entire community on this fantastic accolade!”
